The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jaro, established in 1865, is one of the oldest in the Philippines and was elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1951. Initially covering vast regions, its territory was reduced as new dioceses emerged. Its episcopal seat is the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, home to the revered image of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, famously crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1981.
