Guimaras State University (GSU), located in Barangay Mclain, Buenavista, Guimaras, began as Buenavista Vocational School in 1964 and, since 2019, elevated to a state university. It offers a wide range of programs in fields such as education, agriculture, technology, business, health sciences, supporting the socioeconomic development of Guimaras. GSU is known as the first state college in the Philippines to receive institutional accreditation by AACCUP. The university operates from its main Salvador Campus and has two annexes, the Mosqueda Annex in Alaguisoc, Jordan, Guimaras, and the Baterna Annex in Constancia, San Lorenzo, Guimaras.

Pagpanglabay is a traditional fishing method practiced in coastal barangays of Buenavista, Guimaras like San Miguel, Zaldivar, and Sawang. It involves using a long line baited with hooks placed at regular intervals, set in either deep-sea or coastal waters to catch fish. The practice is done during the night, the practice begins with the nagapanglabay preparing the labay, attaching hooks and bait depending on what they intend to catch, and then deploying it into the water. The Sto. Rosario Catholic Chapel of Buenavista, Guimaras features a heptagonal design with concrete walls, sky blue iron grill doors, and a roof made of corrugated galvanized iron sheets.
