SAPAL WEAVERS ASSOCIATION

The Sapal Weavers Association (SWA), established in 2006, supports the weaving community in Barangay Sapal, San Lorenzo, Guimaras. Originally with 44 members, it presently has 33 active members who engage in the traditional craft of weaving “banig” (handwoven mats) and other woven products. The men handle tasks like planting, harvesting, cleaning, and drying the buri and baryos leaves, while the women do the actual weaving. In 2015, SWA won first place in the “Pasundayag sa Manggahan” competition, and in 2018, the local government donated the Handicraft and Processed Food Center facility for their operations.

PAGPANULO

Pagpanulo, or night gleaning, is a traditional practice in the coastal barangays of Igcawayan and Suclaran in San Lorenzo, Guimaras, where people catch various shellfish and small fishes during low tide at night. Originally, gleaners used bamboo torches (sulo), later replaced by kerosene-fueled gauze lamps, and now flashlights or headlamps for better lighting. The tools they use include bolos, knives, and any type of a container to collect species like shrimp, crab, and various fish, which are either consumed or sold for income. BUKID AYAKAN

Bukid Ayakan is a hill in Barangay Constancia, San Lorenzo, Guimaras that stands 217 meters above sea level. It spans 57.65 hectares and features diverse vegetation, layered rock formations, and a notable cave-like structure known as trangkalan. Its coconut palms and rice fields which have been a source of livelihood to the locals. Historically, it served as a refuge and fortress for residents during World War II. GABALDON BUILDING

The Gabaldon building at Aguilar Elementary School in Guimaras was constructed between 1932 and 1936 under the Gabaldon Law. The building served as the first public school in the municipality of San Lorenzo as a primary school, then turned into a multipurpose hall, even as an evacuation center during Typhoon Ruping in 1990. Over time, the building deteriorated due to natural wear, termites, and typhoon damage, with the roof and wooden floors having collapsed in 2008.
