SPANISH-ERA BELLS OF STA. RITA DE CASCIA PARISH CHURCH IN SIBALOM

The bells of Sta. Rita de Cascia Parish Church in Sibalom, Antique, are three bells said to have been casted during the Spanish colonial period. One was said to have been casted in 1794, another around 1802, and an undated third, making them among the oldest existing bells in Panay and Negros. The bells were casted by Fr. Jose Abollo, the parish priest, who was known for his skill and expertise in bell casting. The bells played a significant role in the town’s religious and social life, calling people to worship and marking important events, and were symbols of the town’s wealth and progress in its colonial history. Due to their age, the bells have suffered damage from weathering and from the 1948 Lady Caycay earthquake, with missing parts and abrasions visible.
