Francisca “Ikat” Sañopal, born on October 17, 1931, in San Joaquin, Iloilo, was a talented track and field athlete known for her achievements in hurdling. She studied at Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT), where she balanced her academics with a successful sports career. In the 1950s, she competed internationally and won several medals in the Asian Games, including a gold in 1958 and a silver in 1962. Sañopal made history as one of the first Filipina Olympians, representing the Philippines in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. After her athletic career, she worked at CIT as a coach and library staff member. Diagnosed with uterine cancer in the mid-1970s, she returned home to San Joaquin, where she passed away around age 44 or 45, remembered for her trailblazing role in Philippine sports.
