Nazaria Lagos, born in 1851 in Dueñas, Iloilo, was a revolutionary heroine known as the “Florence Nightingale of Panay” for her vital role in nursing and organizing medical care during the Philippine Revolution. She and her husband built a secret army hospital on their hacienda, using personal funds and resources to treat wounded soldiers and civilians. Appointed head of the Red Cross in Iloilo, she also managed food supplies, gathered medicinal plants, and rallied community support, even as she endured the loss of two children during a smallpox outbreak. Her home served as a secret meeting place for revolutionaries, and she remained devoted to the Filipino cause, prioritizing national freedom over personal grief. Lagos was later honored as a national hero and recognized locally through Nazaria Lagos Day, celebrated annually in her hometown.
