“My Memoir as a Guerilla Secret Agent” by Manuel T. Tondares, Sr. is a 28-page, typewritten manuscript, documenting the author’s personal experiences as an undercover informant during the Japanese Occupation in the province of Antique. Salvaged from the demolished Tondares house in 2015, the manuscript offers a rare first-hand account of wartime events, including key events, conflicts, civilian and military groups, and even locations, from the perspective of a local civilian. It is an invaluable memoir and is considered as a pioneering work in creative nonfiction authored by an Antiqueño writer. The document’s physical condition has deteriorated over time, with yellowing, stains, tears, signs of aging, having been exposed to rain and termite infestation. Despite this, the manuscript has been scanned and stored digitally for preservation in the Research, Planning & Development Office of St. Anthony’s College in San Jose, Antique, though no active conservation efforts are currently in place for the document.
